when i was about 15 i had a cuban girlfriend. daughter of an actual booted out of the country exile. she was religious, and proper (well not really so much).

at the time, i was reading the book Red Sky At Morning which takes place in New Mexico.

there were/are a lot of spanish words, mostly in italics.
so i asked her what they meant.

to this day I have never seen a human turn that color red

Dang it, now I have to find my copy of Red Sky and re-read it. It’s been two or three decades, I’ve forgotten most of the Spanish slang I learned from that book and the neighbor kids…
