Also, pet peeve: [Columbus] didn’t discover this place, it was already FUCKING HERE (ask the natives about that). Rather, he was one of the first Europeans to arrive here (and even that is debatable).

He was the European who opened regular trade and contact…but again, we need to take a more nuanced and balanced view of his role in history.

We were all taught about him in the context of the triumph of the human spirit and perseverance in pursuing a dream and a goal, but his actual personal history is a lot less savory…
