And therein lies the problem. Our representation is based on geography, not population. There are more red states than blue states. The math just doesn’t work.

There was also a time when “rural state” did not automatically mean “red state”.

And as for the House, just look at Ohio, where GOP won only 56% of the overall votes but carried 12 of the 16 seats.

The more I think about this the more I realize that there is a real problem related to geography as EC has said. The GOP could have legitimately won all the Ohio seats if the population political preferences were evenly spread throughout the state. I’m not sure how to correct this; but there is definitely something wrong when the proportion of the legislators by party doesn’t reflect the proportion of the voters nationwide by party. And let’s never forget the monstrosity of the Electoral College where in 2 of the past 6 elections the winner of the popular vote lost; and a change of only about 40,000 votes would have resulted in a similar outcome in 2020.
