Because if things aren’t going to improve then the appropriate actions to take start becoming ugly. If peace across such lines is not possible, it would be wiser to stop trying to reach across them entirely, preferring instead to prepare for the fighting to come.

I couldn’t agree more. Lincoln should have let the south secede and just said, “Good riddance.”
