Rutgers University is being considered for a merger/reorganization by Gov. Christie, but the school’s problems are more basic. Students have to pay $1,000 in mandatory fees to prop up the athletic program - more than any other school and once again highlights whether schools should be focusing on athletics at a time when costs are sapping academics.
I thought the whole excuse for why schools invested so much time, energy, and money in their athletics programs was that they were supposed to revenue generators (Or, at least, the big ones like football/basketball)? If students are being forced to pay large fees to keep the football program afloat, that flies in the face of that entire line of reasoning.
