As far as I can tell, the court decided in favor of the convicted man. Those three dissented.

The case was returned to a lower court so the man can re-argue his sentence.

The three most conservative justices were the ones who didnā€™t see a problem with the sentence (Thomas, Alito, Gorsuch).

Thomas said the court decision was ā€œno profile in courageā€ and that it would ā€œdelay justice for the victim.ā€ (In the unlikely event I was murdered, I donā€™t want anyone executed in my name as so-called ā€œjustice.ā€ Iā€™ve had this discussion with my wife, who favours the death penalty. I consider it morally repugnant, particularly if the wrong person is convicted.)
