He’s determined to cause the stock markets to spasm again. Because of course he is. He doesn’t know or care the damage he’s doing - unless he thinks the damage is precisely what his base wants. They think that this helps them?

Trump is pandering to his bigot brigade base, and is pushing his white nationalist policy because it’s clear that he and they fear nonwhite children and women. He fears all of it.

You’re afraid of children and women seeking asylum. You’re afraid of nonwhites seeing the US as a shining city on the hill.
