How Unhinged Rhetoric From GOP Senators Sank a Disabilities Rights Treaty

The GOP gave a nonsensical and bogus reason for voting down the treaty. GOPers made claims that are just flat out lies about the effects of the treaty on US citizens.

They ignored decades of jurisprudence showing that US law supersedes those of treaties, and that US statutes can override treaty obligations. The Constitution trumps treaties, so if there is a provision that indicates fewer rights or reduces protections, it can’t override constitutional protections.

And the lame duck answer was just lame. Fact is that the current know-nothing GOP Congressional delegation is hell bent on doing nothing that could potentially inure a benefit to President Obama. They’ve put politics ahead of common sense, logic, facts, or the law.

They blew off former GOP Presidential nominee Robert Dole, his wife Elizabeth, and others who have fought for the treaty. In doing so, they highlighted just how they view everyone other than the privileged few (mirroring their larger problem).
