re: #240 Stanley Sea

The fact that Ellison swore on the Koran makes me happy as an American.

Religious diversity in Congress has been amped up a few notches by Hawaii. The island state just elected Hindu Tulsi Gabbard to the House and Buddhist Senator Mazie Hirono to the Senate, both of them Democrats.

When Gabbard takes her oath of office in January 2013, she’ll be sworn in over the Bhagavad Gita, Hinduism’s sacred book. Hirono, as a Buddhist, was sworn in to Congress in 2007 with no book at all.

and

Kyrsten Sinema was sworn into Congress Monday, but with a twist: She didn’t swear on a Bible. The newly elected representative for Arizona’s 9th district swore her oath of office on a copy of the Constitution instead. Sinema refuses to confirm she is an atheist, as many believe, saying merely that she is “not a member of a faith community” and that all Americans deserve both “freedom of religion and freedom from religion.”

Fuck to death with spoons everyone who can’t see how awesome these things are. God/Entity/Careless Universe, bless us!
