re: #235 EmmaAnne

I asked my mom about that one time. She was a true DFH back in the day, wearing tie dye and going to peace rallies. She said no one she knew ever spit on or yelled at or was hostile in any way to the returning vets. She said they were people their age, their siblings and people they knew, and many were in horrible shape from the war (and she still knows many Vietnam vets, some still not in good shape, so I believe it). They were horrified and sad - not mean and hostile.

I was in the same position. We always had some returning vets from Vietnam in our various demonstrations (into the early ’70s), but I never saw anyone spit, hit or otherwise act hostile toward any of them. In fact, some were more vehemently against the war than your ordinary protester—after all, they had seen the horror that was Vietnam first hand.

It was like the “bra-burning” meme. I never saw that, either, even though I’m a feminist, until we decided to make it a reality at a party one night. : )
