The Normans came later. Basically the Vikings in Denmark subjugated much of Northern France. Living in France, they picked up a lot of French cultural characteristics———language and Christianity. Thus when the Normans invaded “Angla Land” they introduced a lot of words with Latin word roots into the English language.
You can discern the older Anglo words we still have around: Cow, eat, shit…these monosyllable, short and very direct words are Angle leftovers.
