Just as Mr. Wright wrote in his essay, he predicted these sort of responses. He did not ask to compromise with hatred. There will always be hateful people. He asked to compromise with fear. Understand it. Show the fearful why they do not have to be afraid.

It will take time. Lots of time. The other choice is “screw it” and shut yourself in.

On the national level, less than half the voters turned out. Start with them.

That is not compromise. That is empathy and education.
