now, now, Goebbels did a good job of using film makers and creative people who disliked the Nazis and refused to do anything vaguely propagandistic to help create the image that everything was fine and normal and nothing had really happened, turning out films of every day life and romance with scarcely a mention of the political climate.

They thought they were passively resisting all the time they were playing right along.

Ah, true. Only the people closest to the Fuhrer were aware of the reality, that Hitler was bankrupting the nation on the gamble that he could capture Russian resources to keep his wartime economy going. He was also essentially stealing food and grain from the non-Aryans to keep the Aryans as well fed as possible.
