The “2000” one is actually a bit off, as it’s missing the words “Go to college and learn computers.” If you were a kid in high school before 2001, then every adult was telling you that degrees dealing with computers would be worth their weight in gold by the time you graduated. It was the default when a student couldn’t figure out what they wanted to pursue after high school: “You like games right? Like computers? Get a degree in that, everybody will be hiring folks to work on computers in the future.”

Then the Dot-Com Bust hollowed out most of the sector and suddenly you were a fool if you’d thought there was a future in computers. But hey, there were suddenly a lot of opportunities in the military come October 2001…
