Back in the Fifties and before, there were gamers who “played” (serious stuff, though) with tin soldiers. These were historically accurate, and most often hand-painted by the individual “player”. The ones I saw were based upon the Napoleonic War era.

Winston Churchill had an amazing collection of tin soldiers. They’re on display at Blenheim Palace just outside Oxford, England.
