I know a couple who got married at 20, separated several years later and now have each been living with different partners for almost a decade but are STILL legally married to each other because they can’t afford the divorce proceedings.

I’ve warned them that could cause issues (especially if one them gets incapacitated or dies), but they still have no sense of urgency about then situation.
