re: #222 Great White Snark

Almost all of us start on humble gear. For some it takes a long time to learn that the person, not the gear is The Thing. Looking ahead, the DSLR is in trouble. The mirrorless are already in professional still and TV/Cable/Documentary use.

The most important thing for a photographer is the eye and some two-dimensional design study. A good eye with an inexpensive camera will go a lot further than someone that thinks the more they can spend on the camera the better they will be.

2D design is important because it helps you judge shapes quickly and helps with looking at both positive and negative shapes, how to deal with dominant, secondary and accenting shapes and arranging them for dynamic images.

Get good enough and you might get a job where they will provide you with the better equipment.

(And the same goes with musical instruments! Well, in music you don’t need 2D design…)
