Moral of the story: the next time someone like Shaun King or Deray McKesson starts thinking about protesting conditions under a Democratic President…s/he shouldn’t do it because they only empower Republicans, who are much, much, much worse.

Nope. Discouraging Democratic voters from voting for Democrats is never a good idea. Private appeals to mayors and district attorneys would have done more good and less harm than providing wavering voters with scenes of Democratic disarray, and encouraging uncertain Republican voters. I’m generally down on the value of any kind of protest other than checking the box next to the (D) on the ballot, because that’s the only one that directly leads to new policy.

I don’t think the protests like BLM and such were the prime cause here, and I don’t see where Deray falls into this. Shaun King I understand because he ended up actively advocating against Clinton outright and such, but…yeah, I don’t see how the protests directly lead to things like what Sessions wants and will do.
