Acknowledging that what we do could possibly have a difference means having to do hard work, knowing it still might not be effective. Being convinced that the game is fixed and nothing can be done allows one to be lazy and do nothing without feeling guilty about it.

Yup. “There’s nothing I can do about it anyway, so why try?” That was the battle cry of every civil rights movement in history. /s

See also climate nihilists (those who acknowledge anthropogenic climate change, but argue “why bother, there’s nothing we can do”). It is a pass to be lazy or not put in any effort.
