Where I grew up we had a co-op telephone company with two party lines. The first number was the number of long rings, the second number was the number of short rings.

in Flagstaff, every phone number started with 774- or 779- so you could just omit the first two numbers. They also recycled numbers. I got one that used to belong to a Mr Lloyd Beaver.

I finally got fed up with answering calls asking if Mr Beaver was there and started responding with “Mr Beaver is not in. Would you like to speak with Mr Woodchuck?”
