You’re going to see a whole lot more (and there is already a lot) of what is called “Intermodial” where truck vans go long distance on train and then short distance to delivery/warehouse by truck. Much more fuel efficent than long haul trucking. We’ll end up needing more/better/faster rail from cargo which will then make it more desirable for passenger service again.
I’d rather spend a couple of days of my vacation travelling comfortably by rail than in sardine class in Cheapo Airlines after having been molested by the TSA. I imagine I’m not alone in that feeling.
America’s trackage sucks and passenger rail service is pitiful. China’s high speed rail system is efficient and comfortable, and usualy cheaper than flying.
