You cracked your windows and learned to not breathe out straight. Exhaled into your chest, downward. And kept a can of De Icer for the really bad nights. Gloves were mandatory along with scarves and good winter socks/ boots. I would tell friends to bundle up or die.

Mant more years later, in another VW bus, Mr. w and I were moving north in a bad winter in the Northwest, and we had a campstove burning between the front seats. We were wearing t-shirts, getting stares on the freeway from the other VW drivers.
