I have come to think that Carter was in many ways too kindly a man for the job. And many others here and abroad knew exactly how to exploit that. He had the will, the intelligence and a deeply held morality/ethical outlook. An outlook he could forward without a burden of religion.
I think that’s the right take on Carter. I do hope history remembers him well.
