According to the volcanologists, this was a mere level 2 eruption. It’s still more than sufficient to create tsunamis and threats to life and limb.
Orders of magnitude smaller. Volcanologists use the Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI), & it’s based on material ejected. Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai typically produces eruptions on the lower end (2ish). Krakatau 1883 was a VEI 6. Even small eruptions can be dangerous, though.
