A couple years back I wrote up a blog post with my own made-up conspiracy theory of how those fake documents came to be. Like all good CT’s its semi-plausible..

I don’t think they were scanned and OCR’d. There would have been too many errors showing up in the document.

And the proof that they were fake wasn’t so much that it showed things that a typewriter “couldn’t do”—it was that the line-breaking algorithm of Microsoft Word matched—pixel for pixel—that document which purported to be an old typewriter document. Back in the old days, the carriage would “ding” and the operator had some discretion of when to pull the return lever
