I think it always goes back to that one thought so many of us (including Trump himself) had: there was no way he could win. Clinton got the harsh treatment because so many were resigned to the fact that she would win. Trump was a sideshow and was covered as such.

The media were caught violating the prime rule of journalism: assume nothing. Reporters are supposed to question *everything* doublecheck *everything*. Ditto their editors. Yet, most of them assumed that HRC would win and DJT would lose, and planned their coverage of same accordingly. Trouble is, once Trump won, they did not revise their coverage much. Clinton was still flawed, Trump was still the dark horse ready to turn Washington upside down.
