I wish I knew my grandma Helen. She was a somewhat famous model and socialite in Denver during WWII, her husband (my grandfather, who I knew, went to his funeral in 1999) was over in Europe bombing cities for the USAF. Helen was very beautiful in those days. She died of lung cancer in the 70s.

My dad’s father was a Division fire chief in Denver during the war. His people came from Westport, Ireland through Springfield, Illinois (mother was a Sullivan) and he came to Denver in the late teens. His wife, my Da’s mum, was from Ballyvourney, County Cork. Her mom married a hard rock miner and she ran two hotels in Blackhawk and Central City during the boom. Sent my grandmother back to Cork for a “proper education”.
