As I recall, the GOP was pointing out that the Iraq War (attacking a country that did not do us any harm) would pay for itself (by taking their oil).

That was when they were also promising it would be over in a matter of months, the costs would be insignificant, and the troops home by Christmas.

Ah, those were simpler times…/////
