We saw the same shit in ‘09, the “institutionalists” who argued for allowing crimes to go unpunished if only to preserve the institutions. The argument being that if you held accountable those who had abused the powers of the institution, then the people would lose faith in the institution and might even demand greater accountability and reform.

This is the principle that sustains abuses everywhere from the Roman Catholic Church to the US Military to the Penn State Athletic Program…
