Hispanic Catholics tend to focus very heavily on the ‘social justice’ aspect of Catholicism, and especially the obligation to the poor and sick. The current GOP has a Randian mantra of cruelty to the less fortunate that is very much the opposite of that sort of Catholicism. My parents are the same way. Even though they feel very strongly about abortion, they feel much more the obligation to have a society that provides for and cares about the needy, and so they vote Democratic even though they’re religious social conservatives.
