Kids = shorter legs = less chance of escaping the large herds. My guess is that when the shit hit the fan and everyone suddenly got hungry for human flesh, kids were some of the first ones to die.

On a serious note, it’s probably due to the shooting schedule. I can’t imagine it’s all that easy to get full-time child actors or child extras for the large herds due to labor restrictions on kid actors.
