I was amused at how the Pope went from hero to villain to hero again in the RW press depending on what was being reported about him.

The American media has trouble making sense of people who don’t fit American political templates. The thing to understand about Pope Francis is that he’s a firmly believing Jesuit. Which brings things back to to the Counter-Reformation, since that was when then Society of Jesus was founded. It was intended as an elite within the clergy, under the direct control of its general, who in turn answered only to the pope, that could be deployed to fight to fight corruption, disprove heresy, educate the youth, or gain conversions as the situation warrants.

Pope Francis is from the ecclesiastical version of the Guards regiments of the UK and Russia.
