I wouldn’t necessarily call that one a retconn. It wasn’t explained why it was there in A New Hope. Now, explaining the 12 parsec thing, that was some serious stretching.

It’s perfectly acceptable for the Empire to just make that error and not go back and grant an explanation. They could assume their opponents won’t get schematics, and the flaw could be there because they’re fascists and their wunderwaffen are half-baked projections of the leader’s power fantasy not viable military devices.

Same thing but even less productive with the parsec. It doesn’t make sense, but it’s more interesting to let it stand than it is to create unsatisfying backfill: Han Solo being full of shit in the middle of a negotiation actually makes more sense than the highly-parsed explanation they arrived at.

One of the deepest flaws in long running franchises is the manner in which they become lore-obsessed and nitpicking is allowed to overrun the project of telling a story.
