I don’t think that’s the reason. It’s probably a cultural prejudice.

Half the world goes barefoot.

My mother grew up in Southern California. Like everyone else, she and her siblings would run around barefoot a lot.

My great-grandmother, who grew up in the Old Country, never got used to it. “Only peasants go barefoot.”
