Fascinating article in the New Yorker a while back about the 1960s US chemical warfare program (topical because there’s a lawsuit on behalf of the test subjects making its way through the courts).

The most striking thing to me about the whole story was the sheer amount of money that was being wasted by the program. They had guys who were clearly incompetent at best running it, and spending vast amounts of money on experiments that a complete novice could have instantly determined had no chance of working whatsoever.

It did lead me to wonder to what extent the whole conservative “government programs are wasteful” thing could be driven by first-hand experience with military spending.
