I read a more subtle reading of this, that even if he were sure it was fake, if he couldn’t PROVE it was fake without revealing ‘sources and methods’, he needed to take into account that it might come out.

To me, it’s another piece of the puzzle in how effective Russia’s campaign to ruin our election was. And with the fallout from Trump’s disastrous trip abroad starting to come in, clearly money and effort well spent on Putin’s part.
