We may never know. But yes they were horrible bastards who never regretted at all what they did. Byrd doesn’t get off too easy with me but it’s fair to note his regret and attempts to mend his ways. And then there were the Lee Atwaters who got several people elected playing to racism.

Atwater’s karma caught up to him in this life though, much to his (literal) pain, fear & regret. I can only hope his repentance was sincere but there are stories suggesting otherwise. See his wiki article for more. I’ll hope anyway.
