My dad was an ultra-conservative, family values, law & order guy, who used to believe that. But he was also an anesthesiologist, who’d taken call 2 or 3 days a week for 40 years. I got him onboard for marijuana legalization with just one question:

“In all your years in emergency rooms, how many marijuana overdoses have you seen, compared to how many cases of alcohol poisoning?”

I didn’t even have to persuade him about making/keeping abortion legal — he knew very well how many women had been brought into his ER, on their way to either the OR or the morgue, for “hemorrhage” or “infection”.
