The fundamental problem with the trilogy that is irreparable is that Anakin never went through a character arc. We all knew he was going to be Darth Vader some day but it would have been a much more interesting story if he was a likable good guy like his son that got corrupted by the dark side of the force.

See that would have made Return of the Jedi’s ending more meaningful as well. Consider Anakin facing the emperor alone (without his father) getting the same choice Luke was provided but in his case he chose dark.

We would have know that was going to happen going in but it could have been a good story and more tragic, only to be redeemed in Return of the Jedi.

They way they tell the story now is Anakin was also kind of an angry jerk so why did he even bother helping Luke in the end? That kindly old dying version of himself never existed in the prequels so where did he come from?

There was a blog post where a guy suggested what he called “Machete Order” for watching the movies. That is.

V Empire Strikes Back
II The Clone Wars
III Revenge of the Sith
VI Return of the Jedi

With 1 left out, as a way of dealing with some of those structural issues. It’s especially useful for introducing someone to the series.
