Ah, true. Only the people closest to the Fuhrer were aware of the reality, that Hitler was bankrupting the nation on the gamble that he could capture Russian resources to keep his wartime economy going. He was also essentially stealing food and grain from the non-Aryans to keep the Aryans as well fed as possible.

I read that was one major reason that Hitler did not ally himself with Spain: despite the strategic advantage, their economy was in such a dire state that they would have required food and aid that Hitler could not really afford.
