re: #207 ausador

Seems to be where we are now, being a Christian means that I automatically have to be a Republican, that I must love Sarah Palin and deplore Obama, and that I have to believe that Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh are the absolute paragons of truthfulness. That Fox news is the only media outlet that I can trust to tell me what I should believe. That I have to believe in for profit medical/insurance corporations and be against universal healthcare for all citizens. That I have to control women’s reproductive choices via restrictive laws and not allow them to make their own choice.

I also have to check my brain and intelligence at the door and deny the past 200 years (plus) of scientific advancement. I instead have to believe in Genesis as a literal historical document, in six day creation, that everything in the entire universe is only 6004 years old or less. I also have to develop selective amnesia and forget that Bush was the one who engineered and oversaw the bailout for Wallstreet and also the first put forward the idea of government “stimulus” spending and instead blame it on Obama. That I should now proclaim that supporting our troops overseas and the war on terror is wrong, but only because the war is being run by a Democrat majority government. Yet I have to somehow claim to support the military even as I do everything I can to cut the legs from underneath them in public opinion.

I have to tell people that Jesus would have been a Republican if he lived today and that he would support the Republican party platform wholeheartedly. I have to denigrate all other religious beliefs other than Christianity and even attempt to have them outlawed. I have to fervently believe that Obama is not a U.S. citizen, that any Muslim is really a terrorist bent solely on killing me and eradicating Christianity, and that Obama is secretly a Muslim who is cleverly attempting to slowly destroy the country.

Blechh!

As if any of that has a damn thing to do with the Gospel? With living a Christian life and promoting Jesus’ message through the example of your own lifestyle? It is nothing but thinly disguised hatred of everyone “not like you,” teaching hate, teaching racism and intolerance, and living in a constant state of disapproval and hatred of “others.” Unfortunately it is practically immune to criticism because they claim that it is actually just following the teachings of the Christian Religion, and who can say it isn’t?

/I do. But who is going to listen to me? :p

I stepped away, but want to repost this excellent take.
