True, as everyone running for president except Ron Paul has found out the hard way. As witness the ‘boo’s Romney, Santorum, and even Gingrich have gotten when they had to explain in a debate a compromise that gave something to the Democrats. Too much of the base of either party is inherently suspicious of compromise, and is susceptible to being told its “being sold out corrupt Washington Insiders”.

But to counter any visit by the Magical Balance Fairy, let me point out that such tendencies are always worse in the party not holding the White House and that Fox News and breitbart.com have been feeding sentiments of betrayal far more than MSNBC or the Daily Kos ever have done.
