I was thinking earlier today about the “disrespecting the flag” kerfuffle. I’ve never really understood the consecration of strictly secular symbols-even if they are patriotic in nature. You don’t want to stand for the national anthem? OK. You don’t treat the flag with respect? Not a problem.
But I do care whether you treat the country and its citizens with care and respect.
I wonder if it relates to my strictly secular upbringing and lack of other sacred items in my life?
That’s a good point. I’m bothered less by kneeling for the flag than the shit Trump did first as a candidate- attacking McCain’s service,attacking the Khans, and Judge Curiel than that. That to me is far more offensive than someone kneelng quietly during the national anthem.
