I’m so tempted to pick a fight with all my wingnut friends who seem to think that lefty college students want us to be Venezuela. They want us to be Norway. I think they’re a little naive but the idea that they want us to become Venezuela or the USSR is profoundly stupid.

A while back, I pointed out to a friend, who was disturbed how many Millenials are willing to embrace Socialism (From Each/To Each Socialism), that young people generally have good reason to feel ill-served by Capitalism. This is an underappreciated bit of history - Americans flirted with all sorts of crazy governmental and economic ideas before WWII, largely because Capitalism wasn’t really serving the average guy all that well. During the Cold War, Communism didn’t really catch on because we had harnessed Capitalism and gotten it to work for everybody.

But since the advent of Reagan, we’ve increasingly deregulated it and now it’s serving fewer and fewer people, and young people least of all.

It doesn’t have to be that way.
