The Monkees never really recovered from reports that they hired studio musicians to play parts on their albums, but they did not have time to tour, make a TV show and record albums.

But that was a time when bands were supposed to be heavy and serious and singer-songwriter bands were gaining ascendancy.

People said they were monkeying around…
