beatings which either permanently crippled or killed the prisoner,
deprivation of food and rest,
solitary confinement for months at a time,
and the intentional denial of medical treatment.
The U.S. Department of Defense estimated in 1973 that the Communist Vietnamese had tortured to death more than 55 U.S. prisoners.”
