I’m not sure what a “general message” is, but you also said post it as a reply to this so I will.

It turns out my sister’s wife of many years has developed a particularly nasty case of cancer which has wiped out their savings and retirement plans, and threatens my sister-in-law’s life.

My sister had a bout with cancer, her husband had a nasty car accident and they had to declare bankruptcy over their medical bills. This sort of thing should not happen in any civilized society.
