Yep!

I have an external HD that now has everything on it.

Funny thing is a few days ago my wife’s MacBook HD died. Dead. Under warranty so she got a new one for free - but lost everything. We bought a case for the old drive - it is in the freezer right now. We’re gonna try and extract stuff off of it if it will wake up.

No Time Machine? I am paranoid about backups, copying files between 3 functioning machines and 3 external drives every day. Maybe because I’ve been using computers for almost 40 years, and I don’t trust them.

FWIW, they replaced the system board on my MacBook Pro about a month ago, and that meant I had to blow away the previous Time Machine volume and start over. Time Machine uses the ethernet MAC address. No big deal, unless I needed to restore from it. They said I would be able to restore, but fortunately I didn’t need to. I hope they’re right; I’d hate to lose a machine and NOT be able to restore the backup!
