No, that’s really not a good description of Manichean thinking at all. It really has to do with those sides being aligned against each other in a symmetric way. I’m sorry, but saying that comparing a Northern and Southern aspect of racism is Manichean thinking is in no way, shape, or form correct. It might have some vague semblance of sense if I was claiming that the North was awesome on race relations and the South sucked— but I wasn’t.

The black dude with the skullcap who got hassled at the 9/11 site was a good example of that. People assumed he was Muslim because he had a small hat on, and was black.

It’s further complicated by not enough people smacking down the Farrakhans of the world.
