A felony can be a relatively light offense. So you wind up with people that have committed three “stupid” felonies going to jail for life while murderers who have committed only one felony getting 8 years on manslaughter after a plea bargain. You also wind up with overcrowded prisons such as in California.

What is and isn’t a felony can be changed by a simple sentence in an unread piece of legislation that is passed.

If our “elected officials” decided to pass a law that marrying a person they don’t want you to marry is a felony …. or looking a cop cross-eyed is a felony.

You get my point.

In my mind there is a line — rape, child molestation, pre-meditated murder, arson are things that cannot be excused. Having a joint in your pocket — ya’ know, I just don’t see that has major crime.
